Chairman Hua waving to the million people and PLA soldiers of the capital city in front of Tiananmen. From a picture taken from the event, this poster continues Hua Guo Feng’s attempt to establish a new personal cult, as he replaced Mao as the country’s leader. The cult of personality was short lived, as Hua was replaced by Deng Xiaoping two years later in 1978. This poster was created in September 1977, published by People’s Art Publishing, 0.20 yuan. 30” x 21”.

The story of Journey to the West is loosely based on the story of Xuan Zang, a scholar who traveled from Chang’an (where current Xi’An city resides) around the world. According to the poster, he traveled to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nepal, Burma, and India. While in India, he traveled from north to south to teach. He was viewed as a diplomat for China during Tang dynasty and received respect and welcome everywhere he went. This poster was likely a school educational poster in the 80s.
