Please refer to our stock # S1053 when inquiring.
In the course of our travels in China over the past few years searching for items to bring to the U.S. market we often ran across wonderful stone carvings of a wide variety of figures, including many Buddhas. Through our network of buyers in China, we have slowly built up a collection of antique stone sculptures, ranging from ceremonial Buddha statues to mystical guardian animals, such as lions or Kirin. Most of these sculptures are from the Qing Dynasty, with some from as early as the Tang Dynasty. Origins of these stone statues vary. Sitting or standing Buddhas were typically found in rural villages that had a local Buddhist temple. Guardian animal statues were usually from a larger or wealthier village where local residents, typically ranking officials or prosperous farmers, would have the statues at the entrance of their homes as a protection against evil spirits and a demonstration of their wealth. We also have pieces with carvings of the Buddha inside, typically found in the mountainous part of China, sites of monasteries. Most of these monasteries were damaged or destroyed during the Cultural Revolution, and their contents destroyed or stolen. Many of the items taken decades ago are turning up in local markets, somewhat damaged but retaining the patina acquired over the years. Finally we have acquired flat stones with surface carvings, typically used in cemeteries as guardians against evil spirits, and include characters symbolizing longevity and success in the next life. Size: 8"L by 6" W by 33.5" Tall. Weight: 110 Pounds.
