LeiFeng’s stories first appeared in China Youth periodicals, in the 1960’s, Mao’s own Calligraphy that stated “Learn from Comrade Lei Feng” accompanying LeiFeng’s life time story set Lei Feng up to become the new models for all Chinese people. The slogan of “Learn from Comrade Lei Feng” appeared in other papers and magazines, major editorial on how to be a good warrior for Chairman Mao by studying Lei Feng were published. Lei Feng turned out to be the first of a series of heroic figures, most of whom had perished in the service of their fellow citizens. Their dairies, mostly banal and naïve, expressed a new communist morality. The essence of the Lei Feng campaign was to encourage total loyralty, devoite and obedience to Mao and the party at a time of crisis. This color ceramics depicts a young Lei Feng, in the People’s Liberation Army uniform, holding a Mao’s Red Book on one hand, another, a pen and a diary, his “Serve the People” Bag just under his diary. This sculpture vividly depicts a familiar heroic image by capturing a small detail, the diary, which elevated his status from a normal PLA solider to a hero to be studied by millions of Chinese for decades. “Like Lei Feng” became a Chinese idiom to describe someone who sacrifices oneself for the good for others.
