Part of early ignition for Cultural Revolution movement was the introduction of newly revised and politically motivated Peking Opera. Total of 8 most famous Peking Opera were created under Madam Mao, also known as Jing Qing’s direction. Mao’s evaluation of good vs. bad Peking Opera is whether Peking Opera serves socialism or capitalism. Does it serve the workers, peasants and soldiers or oppose them; does it take the road of Marxism-Leninism or the road of revisionism? Jing Qing embarked on her self-appointed task of revolutionizing the Chinese stage. A native Shanghainese, Jing Qing gathered a group of Shanghai party (later known as the Gang of Four) and started the creation and campaigning for these new Peking Operas. This color ceramics features a scene from the famous Peking Opera named “Sha Jia Bang”. In this scene, Aunt Ao Ching owns a small tea shop, and she is holding a board that said “Tea Room” and talking with two guys who are from an army and also collaborators of Japanese army. She told her that she knows nothing about the Chinese army who are fighting with the Japanese, when in fact there soldiers were right inside of her shop. The intent of this Peking Opera shows the strength of Chinese army and coincides with Mao’s philosophy of Revolution is solely dependent on pure military force, and thus praises Mao.
