A pair of Chinese Calligraphy Scrolls
Size: 61 (L) by 15" (W) "If the flower is fragrant, it does not take many; when the room is elegant, it does not have to be large." Written by the founding father of China, Sun Yatsen. China went through a period of profound transformation between the turn of the 19th century and the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The Qing Dynasty was in its final years; a shadow of its former self and under threat from outside, by the Japanese and western powers, and inside, by a series of internal revolts. Long an insulated society that had kept the outside at bay, restricted to a few "treaty ports" and limited trade with the West. As the Qing Dynasty fell into disorder, as had many before it over the millennia, the influence of new ideas, and the existence of foreign powers seemingly more powerful than China, including the Japanese, began to make itself felt. These were the formative years of the Chinese leaders who would guide China through the 20th Century, including Sun Yatsen, Mao Zedong, Chiang Kai-shek and many writers and poets. One of the legacies of this time is a series of sayings coined by these men that reflect China's traditions, including Zen Buddhism, and the new influences that began to make their way into Chinese culture. These sayings remained very popular over the years, even during the Cultural Revolution, and have served as a source of inspiration for generations of Chinese. Even today it is common to found one or more of these sayings on a pair of scrolls adorning the wall of a Chinese household. We have been able to find a number of vintage scrolls collected over the years with a selection of some of the more famous sayings. These are phrases and philosophies that have served as a source inspiration for generations of Chinese. This pair of large Calligraphy paper scrolls is perfect for introducing an interesting and artful decorative Asian Zen element to you living room, library, dining room or bedroom.
