The phrase of "Jian Ku Pu Su" which was first used to describe the red army soliders' condition and spirit during the Long March was used often by the Chinese government to educate the people on how to be overcome difficulities. Jian Ku Pu Su means "Difficulty, Bitterness, Simple and Humble". The government wanted people not to be excessive, to be recycling minded and not to be rid of things just because it's old or used.
